Internship in Media and Communications
2016-17 School Year
We are seeking a communications intern for the fall semester, with the potential to continue through the Spring 2017 semester. The intern’s primary role will be 1) to assist in growing the organization’s presence and brand in media, education and policy circles and 2) to expand and maintain an active social media presence via Twitter and Facebook.
Intern Responsibilities
- Research and write short articles for the website, Facebook, and member updates
- Seek out and post interesting and timely articles on website and social media
- Monitor media coverage of school diversity issues
- Cover meetings of policy experts and coalitions
- Help to coordinate small events
- Design PowerPoints and other presentations for the Executive Director
- Occasional administrative work
Qualifications
Excellent writing and fact-checking skills, social media and computer skills, ability to work quickly and collaboratively, ability to get along with people from diverse backgrounds, and a strong commitment to equal educational opportunity. Work, volunteer or academic experience related to K-12 education, diversity, urban affairs or racial and economic justice preferred.
Compensation: Interns will receive a modest stipend and transportation allowance.
About the Coalition
The Coalition is a small nonprofit that promotes using state charter laws to achieve racially and socioeconomically integrated public schools. We currently have approximately 100 member schools in 14 states and DC and are growing. Our intern will have the opportunity to get in on the ground floor of building an effective membership and advocacy organization through the use of a wide variety of communications tools. While the organization is “virtual,” we also maintain an office in downtown DC, where the intern would be expected to work a minimum of 8 hours per week. The position is ideal for a college student or recent graduate with an academic background in journalism, English, political science or public policy who is looking for an internship that will build professional skills, add resume value, and lead to great contacts in the Washington, DC, job market.
