DESCRIPTION OF THE SCHOOL

Compass Charter School is an intentionally diverse, inquiry-based, and progressive elementary school that opened in the fall of 2014 in Fort Greene, Brooklyn. We serve children from pre-kindergarten through fifth grade.

THE OPPORTUNITY

Compass Charter School is seeking a dynamic and committed music teacher to join us for a leave replacement. Our music teacher teaches one or two 50-minute sessions to each of our classes each week. This school year, weNext year we will serve grades Pre-K – 5, approximately 330 students. Our music teacher also coordinates and runs a weekly all-school Community Gathering and participates in planning and collaboration with other arts specialists and classroom teachers.

Qualifications:

Master’s Degree in Music Education preferred
NYS Certification in Music
3 or more years of teaching experience in an applicable setting (arts-based school, non-profit, teaching artist) preferred
Educational philosophy aligns with the mission and vision of Compass
Training and experience with Orff and/or Kodaly methods preferred
Training and experience with creative movement for young children
Previous success in raising academic achievement of students in an urban community
Strong interpersonal skills
Strong written and oral communication skills
Reflective practitioner in a state of constant professional growth and a willingness to share their craft with others
Has own passions and interests
Knowledge of the school neighborhood
Commitment to and knowledge of experiential and inquiry-based teaching and learning
Commitment to diverse learning environments

Responsibilities:

Keep self and organization current with arts education practices
Seek and coordinate partnerships with organizations that contribute to our commitment to arts education
Plan and implement professional development for teachers, focusing on music and movement
Assist teachers in incorporating music and movement into their classroom culture, unit plans, and daily lesson plans
Collaboratively plan and implement interdisciplinary units with grade level teams, coordinators, and Directors of Curriculum and Instruction
Teach music classes to all students
Integrate music and movement in each classroom by co-teaching in each classroom throughout the school year
Use New York State Learning Standards for the Arts and New York City Blueprint for Teaching and Learning in the Arts to inform planning and assessment
Use a variety of assessments to measure student learning and drive instruction
Use student performance data to tailor and differentiate curriculum to individual students and to determine small groupings and modifications
Integrate the Compass Habits for Living and Learning into school culture, classroom culture, units of study, and interactions with staff, families, and students
Integrate the real world and surrounding community into units of study, lessons, and classroom culture
Lead the music and/or movement portion of our weekly All-School Gathering.
Maintain positive relationships with students and staff
Maintain confidentiality with student information and records
Create a positive and safe classroom culture and community
Report progress to families through narrative progress reports
Supervise and support arts initiatives within the school
Actively participate in a professional learning community, including professional literature circles, peer coaching, reflection meetings, planning meetings, data meetings, and staff meetings
Actively participate in the school’s decision-making process
Assist with operations as needed (e.g. supervise lunch and recess)
Provide small group instruction and intervention as needed for our Response to Intervention Program
