6 Things To Know About #DCSC2020

“Thank you so much for this opportunity. I am a better leader as a result of what I learned. I cannot wait to start engaging my school in these critical conversations and use what I learned to make [my school] more inclusive and equitable.”

-School Leader on 2019 Annual Convening

Less than 2 weeks until #DCSC2020! With dynamic breakout sessions and keynotes, DCSC members and partners will gather to sustain the movement for diverse-by-design schools and uphold our commitment to Intentional Integration — more important now than ever.

1. We are a national movement

From 14 members to 60, we represent 20 states, more than 170,000 students and are growing. You’ll meet like-minded leaders from across the country leading the diverse-by-design movement. Shout out to Baltimore Montessori (MD), Brooklyn Prospect (NY), Central Park School for Children (NC), and Inspired Teaching Demonstration (DC) for all bringing more than 6 people to #DCSC2020!

2. We are student-centered

We are so lucky to be able to learn from the voices of our students and alumni at this year’s convening. Our programming will feature a student performance by EPIC Theatre Ensemble, visits to local DCSC member schools, and a student/alumni panel. We believe this focus on student voice distinguishes our convening and we’re so excited for it.

3. We are member-led

By listening to our members we developed a slate of breakout sessions based on your priorities, designed our programming around your needs and recruited more members to attend than ever before. Members were involved with this year’s convening through the planning committee, selecting content for programming, and leading breakout sessions.

4. We are at the vanguard of DEI strategies

All of this year’s keynote speakers and breakout session leaders are on the cutting-edge within the education field in creating new ways to achieve equity for students.  We also know that the real sparks are lit during conversations between members when the next innovative strategy just might develop.

5. We are about community

In addition to formal programming, the convening also provides unstructured time for members to network including a Welcome Reception and Coffee Talks. Immediately before the convening, members will connect in our Communities of Practice, developing professional learning relationships that will persist over the next 6 months and beyond.

6. We have a PACKED agenda

Make sure to be in your seat by 12:00 SHARP on Thursday January 30!  We kick off with fantastic keynotes from Sonia Park, Cheyenne Batista and Mohammed Choudhury. We’ll have a great slate of programming through 4pm on Friday, January 31 so please plan accordingly. We don’t want you to miss a minute!

Welcome Reception

As part of our Annual Convening, DCSC will host a Welcome Reception after the first day of activities on Thursday, January 30th.

The Welcome Reception is an opportunity for DCSC members to reconnect, recharge, and re-engage with folks from across the country.

School Launch Heads of Program Meeting

In conjunction with our annual convening, UnifiED and other national/regional fellowship programs will hold its second annual meeting of folks leading new school launch programs and initiatives. Hosted this year by City Bridge, this is an opportunity for like-minded programs to come together and share best practices.

If you or anyone else has any questions about the UnifiED program, email Ashley to set up time to speak at the convening!
