Historically, there has been misalignment between the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) and state-level definitions of proficiency causing confusion for policymakers, educators, and parents alike. This “honesty gap” is demonstrated by the disparities between state NAEP scores and what states report as their proficiency rates. The COVID-19 pandemic also interrupted the American education system, effectively exacerbating these achievement gaps by putting students behind academically. Student data shows even wider gaps for low-income students and students of color both prior to and after the pandemic. As NAEP releases updated achievement data this month, state leaders will need to be strategic in addressing the gaps that persist and in meeting the needs of students. Join us for a conversation around the appropriate use of NAEP data in closing the honesty gap in the wake of COVID-19.
