Event Details

This live virtual event is hosted by Education Board Partners.

Inequity has been a pressing issue in public education long before COVID-19, severely limiting opportunities for many children of color, children from low-income families, and children with special needs. The pandemic has brought existing inequities into sharper relief and exacerbated them. The murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery and the resulting protests have also brought heightened (and long overdue) awareness to the consequences of racism and inequity.

The governing boards of schools have a moral responsibility to act. These times call for bold and courageous governance. Education Board Partners works to ensure that boards governing public charter schools and education nonprofits center equity in their decision-making. Boards have the power to tackle issues of systemic racism, bias, and opportunity gaps head-on. Boards that commit to equity-focused governance can close those gaps. Boards that don’t will widen them.

This webinar features one of the nation’s most prominent education leaders:

  • Dr. John B. King, Jr., 10th U.S. Secretary of Education and president and CEO of The Education Trust. Dr. King will discuss why an equity-focused approach to governance is no longer optional, and what’s at stake if we go back to governance as usual.

Also joining us to respond to Dr. King’s remarks and share their perspectives will be:

  • Dr. Kelli PetersonChief Portfolio Innovation and Accountability Officer with NOLA Public Schools
  • Abigail Smithboard chair at E.L. Haynes Public Charter School and former DC Deputy Mayor of Education
